Dr. Josephine Hua (pronouns: she/her/hers), often referred to as Dr. Josie, is a Registered Psychologist in British Columbia (#4093). She offers online assessment and therapy services across the province of BC. For those who prefer to be seen in person, she has an office located in central Port Moody, BC to serve individuals and families living in the Tri-Cities, Burnaby, Maple Ridge and beyond. She is often described as warm, caring, friendly and supportive, while at the same time always focused and intentional on working towards agreed-upon goals and creating positive change.

Dr. Josie takes a developmentally sensitive approach with children, adolescents, adults and families, and is committed to applying research supported practice standards in the psychological services she provides.  She specializes in individuals coping with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, difficulties with emotion regulation, stress-related problems, as well as challenges related to parenting and family relationships.

Whether working with individuals, parent-child relationships, or entire families, Dr. Josie understands that issues don't occur in a vacuum and will always consider larger contexts including family dynamics, upbringing, past experiences, cultural background, developmental stage and systemic barriers.

Tailored Interventions

My Approach

My goal at the start and throughout the therapeutic process will always be to establish a trusting professional relationship, where you and/or your child can feel safe and as comfortable as possible to tackle the concerns that bring you in to seek support. Throughout our time together, I welcome your feedback and input so that we can create a therapeutic space that is truly client/family-centred and collaborative.

As I am trained and experienced in a number of different psychotherapy approaches that have been found to be effective in helping people cope, reduce symptoms and improve well-being, my approach is to select and often integrate one or more treatment modalities known to be effective in addressing your particular concerns. I also value the application of family systems and attachment-based theories in my work.  Treatment plans will consider your personal style, preferences, needs, as well as your strengths.  The result is providing tailored and context-informed care that works.

Research-supported interventions I draw on include:

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapies (CBT), including Exposure Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention  (ERP) Therapy and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

  • Interpersonal Therapies (IPT)

  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
